Why Is My Energy Bill Suddenly Higher? HVAC Problems That Could Be Driving Up Costs

A rising utility bill is rarely because of one big failure. It’s a phrase we come back to often in these blogs, but it holds up especially well for HVAC problems. It’s usually because of a handful of smaller issues quietly forcing your equipment to work overtime.

Dirty condenser or evaporator coils make it harder for a system to transfer heat, so it has to run longer to do the same job. Clogged filters and poor airflow force motors and compressors to work harder than they were built to, and in the worst cases can cause coils to freeze or units to trip altogether. Low refrigerant charge or a slow leak has a similar effect, as does a motor, fan, belt, or bearing that’s failing or just past its prime.

Equipment that’s short cycling or running constantly, economizer and damper issues, or controls and thermostats that have drifted out of sync all add to the load, and ductwork or building pressure problems can force a system to fight itself just to hold setpoint. Aging equipment often loses efficiency altogether and needs longer runtimes just to hit the same setpoint it used to reach with ease.

On their own, none of these issues are all that dramatic. But the pattern is always the same: when equipment runs longer and harder than it should, energy use goes up, and so does the risk of major component failure down the line. Small maintenance issues can quietly drive up your bill long before anyone realizes there’s a mechanical problem behind it.

Before you even see the rising numbers on your bill, your equipment is usually waving a red flag at you. Here are a few things we recommend you keep an eye out for:

  • Equipment that runs constantly but still doesn’t maintain temperature
  • Utility bills that increase without a clear business reason
  • Hot and cold spots throughout the location
  • Frequent service calls for the same unit
  • Higher humidity inside the space
  • Short cycling, repeated alarms, or frequent resets
  • Unusual noises or vibration
  • Store teams adjusting thermostats constantly
  • Units that cool or heat temporarily but can’t keep up during peak hours

If any of these sound familiar, your system likely isn’t broken yet. It’s just inefficient. And inefficient systems cost money every day they go unaddressed.
